Color Accuracy

Apple’s newest and largest iPhone, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, has the best display in the industry, according to display technology expert DisplayMate. The smartphone’s 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion technology set or matched 12 record-setting display performance tests, including color accuracy and brightness.

The XDR panel has been optimized with a Diamond Sub-Pixel layout, similar to the one used in high-end OLED displays. This design ensures that the display is able to produce bright, colorful images. The display also provides a high peak brightness of over 1,000 nits, which is excellent for HDR content.

Additionally, the XDR panel has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which is faster than the 60Hz refresh rate on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This allows for more rapid updates of the display’s sub-pixels, which improves image quality and reduces ghost touches and flicker.

In addition, the XDR panel features an incredibly wide color gamut with support for both sRGB and Wide DCI-P3 colors, so users can experience the full range of colors. This wide color gamut provides a consistent viewing experience for all color-sensitive apps, websites, and video content.

Another key feature of the XDR display is its low reflectivity, which means that it doesn’t absorb too much of incoming light. The display is also capable of adjusting its white point and color balance based on ambient light, which makes it easier to read in low-light conditions.

To help mitigate the potential for blue light to cause health issues, the XDR panel also includes a night shift mode that alters its color balance in an effort to limit the amount of blue light from the screen. This can reduce the risk of eye fatigue and promote better sleep at night.

The XDR display was also tested by GameRevolution, which found that it reproduced accurate colors under 1000 lux lighting in the standard sRGB color space. This is an impressive result, especially considering that OLED screens can display warm tones as a default, which can be distracting.

Brightness

Using DXOMARK, we measured the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s screen performance when it was exposed to various types of lighting and a variety of content. We then used the results to compare to the display of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and found that the 13 Pro Max’s performance was much better across all aspects.

Our tests also showed that the display of the iPhone 13 Pro Max maintained its colors when held on angle. This is an improvement over the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which showed significant color degradations when held on angle, including a very noticeable orange cast with the blue light filter on.

The display of the iPhone 13 Pro Max also has a high 120 Hz Refresh Rate, which is twice as fast as the 60 Hz Refresh Rate of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This enables the display to update its sub-pixels very quickly based on what’s being displayed on it.

Another important feature of the display is the Night Shift Mode, which reduces the amount of Blue Light that’s emitted by the display to help you sleep. This is an important feature, because too much Blue Light can interfere with your circadian rhythm and cause problems with your sleep patterns.

You can turn the Night Shift on or off through the Settings app’s Display & Brightness section. You can even choose to have the iPhone automatically transition its appearance between light and dark based on the time of day or set a custom schedule for when it should switch back to normal.

Contrast

The display in the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion technology that reaches up to 120Hz and produces brightness levels of up to 1200 nits, making it perfect for watching HDR content. It also features True Tone, Wide color, Haptic Touch, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The Intensity Scale is a critical part of the display’s ability to produce High Absolute Color Accuracy because it controls how the Red, Green, and Blue primary colors mix on the screen to create all of the displayed colors, including White. Without an accurate Intensity Scale, the Image Contrast and Brightness Intensities will be wrong everywhere on the display.

Fortunately, the Intensity Scale on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a close match to the Standard, with measured Gamma of 2.21. This is the same as what was measured on our reference test display, and is a big reason why the DisplayMate awards were given to the iPhone 13 Pro Max over the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (Snapdragon).

We measured the OLED display for a number of different DisplayMate tests, including: viewing angle, color accuracy, brightness, contrast and more. The iPhone 13 Pro Max earned “green” ratings across the board for all of its measurements, meaning that the display was very good to excellent.

When held at a typical viewing angle, the display shows no significant changes in color compared to holding it flat. This is a huge improvement over the previous generation 12 Pro Max, which changed green and blue on angle and had a very noticeable orange cast when held flat on a table.

Even when holding the phone in landscape mode, the screen remains bright and clear. This is especially useful if you want to watch video or use it in the dark without straining your eyes, or with polarized sunglasses on.

The OLED display is also very readable under direct sunlight. This is particularly important when you have a lot of text or other information that needs to be read in the sun, as it will help keep you from having to constantly adjust your reading position.

The display is also very good at holding up to a variety of viewing angles, with a 24 percent decrease in brightness at 30 degrees. This is much less than the average LCD display, and it makes it easier to see the iPhone 13 Pro Max when you are using it in different positions.
